What Happens After 50?
Does being over 50 mean you have to expect less from your body?
I have worked with many people over the age of 50 and 60. Some had decided to start training only then, while others already had prior fitness and exercise experience and just wanted to do more and better. The underlying reason they came to me was the same though.
“I am feeling older and I want to be healthy and be able to live my life to the fullest for many years still. My body needs to be able to give me this freedom.”
The good news is that our bodies are capable of so much even at a later age. I have seen people turn back the years and become stronger than they’ve been since their 30’s or 40’s. It is never too late to train. Your body is an incredible machine and it is very much responsive until much later in life. Your metabolism can be brought back to life and you can feel strong and lean again.
For women, often, it’s menopause which causes problems. During this period of life, weight gain is to be expected, sometimes up to 10kg. Hormones are changing and the need to train and be healthy is at the highest ever. Weight-lifting, eating the right way and moving a lot is no longer an option. It is essential.
After 50 men usually just need to lift weights, do some cardio and work on their mobility. Eating well is obviously also required.
Doing these activities consistently, integrating them into your weekly routine, will result in a high quality of life.
Training during this period of your life will result in a HUGE difference to your physique and wellbeing than if you didn’t train. Your muscles, your bones, your mobility and overall strength are all going to stay well into your 60’s and 70’s. Your mood will be better. You will be able to live a better life. A longer life.
All that for just a few hours of your week of training is really not a bad deal!
